History:

The islands was settled by American Loyalists in the late 1780s. It is believed that the first Post Office in the Bahamas was at Pitts Town on Crooked Island. The island's capital is Colonel Hill where government offices are located. South of Pitt's Town is Landrail Point, a good anchorage, and home of an ancient plantation ruin called Hope House. Acklins forms the eastern side of the Crooked Island triangle, with many bays and caves along the coast.

There are no banks at Crooked Island but the post office near the police station may provide basic banking transactions. Crooked Island is in the Eastern Standard Time zone (EST). Daylight Savings Time (DST) is observed in the summer months from March to November, When the time is shifted forward by 1 hour to Eastern Daylight-savings Time (EDT). It shifts back by 1 hour after the summer months, and returns to EST.

The island is served by Colonel Hill Airport. There are 2 weekly flights from Nassau to Crooked Island on Bahamasair (Wednesday & Saturdays) and 2 per week on Pineapple Air (Mondays & Fridays). The flights make a stop in both Crooked Islands and Acklins so it is important to listen to the cabin crew as to which airport the flight lands at first.
